This panel explores the reading of image + text, the cultural significance of imagery in contemporary and future literature, and the dissolution of boundaries between artistic disciplines.
How can images be incorporated effectively in literary work? When do images become necessary, functioning as more than just illustration? What can fiction learn from graphic novels, hypermedia, video games, podcasts, web pages, and other developing contemporary art forms?

Spuyten Duyvil Press celebrates the release of its new collection of short fiction: Wreckage of Reason: XXperimental Women Writers Writing in the 21st Century. Reading and discussion with five contributors whose work examines the social and political conundrums of our era by juxtaposing pop cultural icons and current social phenomena to create a new dimension in narrative. Also, an excerpt from Di Blasi's New Directions book, Drought, will appear in an anthology, The Why and Later, related to this panel. Friday, February 1 12:00 p.m.-1:15 p.m. New York Suite, Hilton, 4th Floor F146. Speaking Through Silence: Women Respond to Rape and Assault. (Carly Sachs, Julia Spicher Kasdorf, Amanda McGuire, Molly Fisk, Alice Anderson, Harriet Levin) Too often, rape and assault silences women, making them afraid to trust, afraid of their own bodies, afraid to name what has happened and what continues to happen. In a way, the writing of these poems becomes a way of healing. However, this can often be a challenging process---turning personal trauma into art. In this panel, female poets will discuss their poems from the anthology, the why and later. The panelists will speak to the process of writing these difficult poems, publishing these poems, and how they view their role as a writer writing about rape and sexual assault.
