The Dawning of an Aspect
My landscapes fluctuate between figuration and abstraction while investigating the way war and nature are explored in art and film. This subject has opened up age old questions about the figure-ground relationship. I have been thinking about the romantic landscape of battle scenes as seen throughout art history and the relationship of cinematography in films (specifically war cinema) to painting. Recently, I have also begun researching various war monuments and their peculiar forms and the way they memorialize war. Some of my new paintings and sketches include references to bronze figurative monuments and serve as a continuation of the sculptural, war-like figurations that I have been painting in my landscapes.
